silently praying 'please please please don't jump!', eyeing the open box of frogs as i walked through the wet market! UGGHHHH
its my 2nd time at the market (basically a street filled with vendors; 7mins walk from my house) and this time round, it was a MORTIFYING EXPERIENCE!!
perhaps cus Wini asked me to buy fish if possible, since we have been eating meat&veg; so i was on a look-out for pomfret fish (suggested by mummy since its easy to cook) and crap i so did not realise there are so many live weird-looking fishes, and I HATE BEING NEAR LIVE FISHES!! :(
yes i love eating fish- i can eat it daily and not get sick of it! but i just cannot stand being near live ones! so imagine my terror as i was surrounded by boxes and boxes of live fishes + frogs + godknowwhatsthatuglyswimmingthingis!!!
luckily the stall from which i bought pomfret did not have live fish (i deliberately avoided the stalls that did!) okie let me give you a breakdown of some cheap groceries i can get here (mainly because i stay in a old neighborhood, so the groceries here are cheaper!)
- 2 small pomfret fish 18rmb (really cheap as Li Ning bought hers 1 for 18rmb!)
- 1 small bittergourd 4rmb; bunch of veg + mushrooms 6rmb
- 1 piece chicken breast 3.6rmb (i bought 2 for 8rmb the last time) oh yeah about chickens, they do sell live chicken, Li Ning and Fiona were relating how they bought one, and had it slaughtered!
to rid of the mortifying images of live fish and frog, i was to meet Li Ning and Fiona at Science Museum (Line 2) as there's supposedly cheap shopping! But I prefer 七浦路! The shops at Science Museum are very aggressive on touting (usually on angmohs, so we Asians are quite safe) but the stuff are very touristy. so unless you are looking for Toms shoes (about 30rmb a pair) or looking for imitation branded bags, no point coming here...
took a long train ride to 南翔 (Line 11) for supposedly 'famous' 南翔小笼包. you will need to take Bus No.2 from Exit 2, its just a stop away. upon alighting, we saw the restaurant, expecting it to be filled with ppl feasting away; yet the place was lacking of customers! but the starving us decided to just order a 笼 each (20 xlb for 25rmb).
truth be told, i am a not a fan of xlb back in Singapore, but SH has so many shops selling cheap and good xlb its easy to succumb to!
however, the 南翔小笼包 skin was too thick and overall not very flavorful :(
by the way, there's a lane just behind our restaurant filled with shops selling 南翔小笼包... -.-
Haha, welcome to the world of Nemo!
