the battle hymn of mothers

With no internet access (until late this afternn) in office, I have sought to keep myself occupied by reading the Options, Futures tb on my desk… however lines and lines of investment jargon leaves me sleepy and I cannot risk dozing off at work!

Fortunately I managed to borrow Wini’s newly bought book: Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mum , written by Amy Chua

Her book focuses on the stereotypical Chinese parenting, and how she wielded it on her girls. Chua stated her goal as a parent is prepare her children for the future- not to make her children like her. This struck a chord with me, as I recalled how my mum said the same thing during our clashes as I thought her to be overbearing and ridiculous

I have a dragon mum, and she did use some of the Chinese parenting style (such as disapproving of sleepovers). The Chinese believe that the best way to protect their children is by preparing them for the future, letting them see what they’re capable of, and arming them with skills, work habits, and inner confidence that no one can ever take away. I am reminded of how my mum made us learn piano and my dad taught us tennis when we were young. Being young and active, I dreaded being cooped up at home practicing on the keys, preferring the sun and sweat on the courts. I did try to be obedient and practice for an hour on the piano on my own, but it soon dawned on me that I rather concentrate on performing well in tennis. On this, my mum does make use of Western parenting- respecting our individuality, encouraging us pursue our passions, and seldom comparing among my siblings and me. Thanks mummy dear J

My best takeaway from the book was Chua’s quote:'Never not try smth out of fear. Everything I’ve ever done that’s valuable is smth I was terrified to try.’ Looking back at my 21years, I think I am be proud to say that I have been fearless and relentless in trying out things, and will definitely continue doing so! :)
